Back to Norway

We are packed…finally. Ready to leave for Copenhagen, the starting point for our cruise up the west coast of Norway, which has always held a special place in my heart. Norway is the homeland of my father’s ancestors. As young college coeds touring a summer in Europe, my sister and I were hosted on a road trip through the country with our friend, Lars, who showed us the beautiful landscape and lifestyle through the eyes of a native born. I loved it, am proud of my heritage, and have always wanted to return.

America is a land of immigrants and I have always embraced my father’s roots, partly because my surname was decidedly Norwegian and required frequent explanation of its ethnic spelling and pronunciation. I do believe that I cultivated some patience from having to justify my name…not unlike someone who’s last name begins with a “Z” will enforce a tolerance for always having to wait until the end.

Our journey will also take us inside the Arctic Circle and to some northernmost areas of Russia. We will experience a wide range of climate, the midnight sun, and the spectacular Norwegian coastline fjords that I have previously only seen from land, looking down. I look forward to sharing with you my paternal homeland.
