Colombian Welcome Mat

Instead of the usual stories-high stacks of shipping containers, swarthy longshoremen, cheap souvenir stands, and duty free shops, the port of Cartagena adds a very special welcome for its arriving visitors. The path to enter or exit the port will lead you through a natural paradise…a port oasis. Officially known as Aviaro Nacional Baru de Cartagena de Indias, this award winning sustainable 1,000-square-meter mini zoo and aviary is a government initiative developed to reinforce the country’s commitment to the environment, to safeguard certain animal species, and to simply provide a delightful attraction to welcome tourists by showcasing examples of Colombia’s lush biodiversity.

On the way in or out of the port, visitors can walk a path through a magical, tropical forest habitat in which birds and animals wander about at ease, up close and personal with their human counterparts. The birds fly about freely among the people, are friendly and curious, even willing to pose for portraits and selfies. Native to the habitat are squawking macaws, toucans, brilliantly hued parrots, strutting peacocks, delicate flamingoes, chatty howler monkeys, even iguanas and anteaters. And not to ruin the experience with the ubiquitous shopping opportunity, this oasis actually offers a decent souvenir shop and nice alfresco cafe where you can have a delicious cup of Colombian coffee, or a sweet dolce as you admire the surrounding flora and fauna.

I discovered this extraordinary place on my way back to the ship after an already great day, enticing me to stay just a little bit longer in this enchanting city.

  1. Hi Kristy, looks like you’re having a blast! My son is in Cartagena today too! He’s traveling around for 6 weeks while the weather is too iffy for a food truck in Denver. Love seeing your updates!!! Barb
